Thrive

Thrive is a small national charity that believes that anyone with a disability can benefit from gardening.

The charity offers practical advice and inspiration to any disabled person who wants to begin or continue gardening and runs programmes for disabled people of all ages at gardens in Reading and London. The charity is also in contact with 900 garden projects nationwide, which helps disabled people to find help and advice in their local area.

At the Thrive Trunkwell Garden Project in Beech Hill, near Reading, therapists work with over 100 disabled people each year ranging in age from 14 to 70 years. These disabled gardeners may have learning disabilities, mental health needs, a physical disability or a sensory disability such as partial sight or deafness. The benefits they gain from gardening include improved physical and mental health, an opportunity to meet other people, the chance to get outside into the fresh air and to learn new skills.

The garden at Beech Hill has areas for growing herbs, fruit and vegetables as well as flowers, a large greenhouse, polytunnels and a pond to encourage wildlife. A new area of the garden, called the Secret Garden, was opened in 2007 and is designed to help people with dementia and young people with learning disabilities.
