THE LONG WALK, 9 MILES - TAKING IN CHARVIL, TWYFORD & HURST
Please take
care to follow the direction signs as the route is unclear in places. Although most of it is on
footpaths, there is some road walking on narrow country lanes without pavements and some busy
roads to cross - so please take care. Wear warm clothing and take a waterproof jacket.
Comfortable shoes are essential e.g. walking boots or trainers and it is a good idea to take a
snack and drink. There will be three checkpoint/drinks stations at roughly equal distances on
the route.
DIRECTIONS - Go through the main gate into the park to the Lake and T L. After 500m T L over bridge then T R towards White Swan Lake. Follow around to the L. Keep on path ahead past Heron’s Lake on right. At junction with Sandford Lake T L. At the road T L then T L at the T sign past Sandford Mill. Follow track to Air Museum, T R and T R again into Mohawk Way.
T L into Sandford Park, follow path to R back onto Mohawk Way. After 200m T R into Parimeter Road. Follow path ahead by houses, then into wooded area. At junction T R then path bears left to reach Charvil Parish Notice Board. T R down lane opposite. At Lands End Public House T R into Park Lane, after 15m T L through gate into Charvil Country Park. Follow path on R by lake edge and then next to river to railway viaduct. Go though gate and under viaduct, over bridge ahead. Take path ahead with river on R. Bear left with trees on R. Bear R then T R between two large willow trees, over ditch towards houses.
Follow path to R and then to L of lakes. Keep ahead to grassy path to small bridge. Bear L keeping lake on R. Go past footpath sign and stile, then go to gap in trees, 30m to L of gate in the corner. T R at road, go past milestone, T R opposite Mill House into new housing area. T L then cross bridge on R. T L along river, crossing second bridge into Loddon Nature Reserve. Keep to river path until railway bridge. T R keeping wire fence on L. After 200m T L under viaduct. Follow path to road.
T L onto bridle track then cross road keeping to bridleway. At road T L, go over bridge then T L over bridleway. Follow this bridleway and then the footpath ahead to A321. Cross road to stile opposite and follow along field edge. Cross another stile and continue to stile and footbridge. T R into green track and then T R into Poplar Lane, take path on R immediately past Little Farm and follow field edge to left. Cross road and go towards Green Man Public House. T R follow road to reach A321 then T L go past Cricket Club. T L into Broadcommon Road and bear L. Continue on over bridge T R into bridleway. Continue along bridleway as it bears R past Cartref Farm to A321.
Cross A321, T R then T L over stile. Continue over 2nd stile and ahead. Cross stile in R hand corner and cross road. Bear R and enter graveyard through gate opposite. Follow path through churchyard to front of St. Nicholas’ Church. Cross road carefully to Alms Houses, then T R. As road bears L cross it and follow bridleway ahead. At road T R for 200m, beware of traffic here then go L through gate. Follow path to L by hedgerow to Sandford Lane. Take path directly opposite next to Boatlair House. T R into car park then R again into Black Swan Sailing Club car park. Cross car park and follow path across footbridge to lake. T L follow lake to picnic area then L back to the start.
