The Rotary Club of Reading Maiden Erlegh

Based in the Thames Valley in Central Southern England the Club was formed in 1989 and now has over 50 members, both men and women.  Meeting every Tuesday evening at Reading University the Rotary Club of Reading Maiden Erlegh is part of Rotary International, a worldwide organisation which began in Chicago, USA in 1905. It now has more than 1.2million members in more than 30,000 Rotary Clubs in 200 countries; it is the largest ‘volunteering’ organisation in the world. In the British Isles there are nearly 1,800 Clubs with over 60,000 members.

On a global basis Rotary has played a major part in eradicating Polio, promotes peace and understanding, sponsors more international exchange visits of young people than any comparable organisation and is likely to be involved in every humanitarian disaster funnelling money and resources through its network of Rotary Clubs.

The Rotarians of Reading Maiden Erlegh have raised over £350,000 for charity since it was formed as well as providing  assistance to many local projects. Currently it is actively involved in helping Whitley Park School to improve its literacy and is providing financial support to Thrive, a locally based national charity whose aim is to enable positive change in the lives of disabled and disadvantaged people through the use of gardening. The Club is also paying the running costs of the Karuneipuri Orphanage in India as well as funding a new sanitation block and kitchen toilet block.

It continues to fund  Shelter Boxes which are sent to disaster areas to provide emergency shelter, and has provided substantial support to Addington School, the Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance service, Royal Berks Hospital and many other local and national charity projects.

The funds raised through the Rotawalk will go to Thrive, the Karuneipuri Orphanage in India and 2tenfm Kids.

Rotary welcomes men and women who share its ideals and who are willing to give a portion of their time to support the local and international community. If you would like to learn more about Rotary in general or your local Rotary Club in particular please click here.
